  • Prof. Tho Le-Ngoc, McGill University, Canada
Frequency bands above 6 GHz, and especially above 30 GHz, are becoming promising candidate for 5G mobile communications because there are up to tens of GHz of spectrum available. Although higher frequencies have been widely applied to point-to-point communications, their application to mobile communication is still at a very early stage, and challenges include high path loss and body loss, higher penetration and foliage loss, mobility issues, multiple user access, coverage, adaptive access and backhaul and deployment issues in dense network, etc. Promising techniques include novel beamforming techniques using massive antenna arrays, low form factor chip-scale antennas for base stations and user devices, and adaptive backhauling. This workshop will discuss spectrum and regulatory issues, areas of technical challenge for these higher frequencies, and promising enabling approaches and solutions to address these critical challenges.

  • Mr. Jing Chen, Security Standard Engineer of Huawei Wireless Access Lab.
  • Dr. Haiguang Wang, Senior Researcher of Huawei Shield Lab.
  • Dr. Guilin Wang, Senior Researcher of Huawei Shield Lab.
  • Dr. Xin Kang, Senior Researcher of Huawei Shield Lab.
The advent of 5G broadband, low latency, communication anywhere/anytime with enabling approaches for extreme densification, dynamic radio topology, and flexible function allocation present challenges to the protection of subscriber data/location/identity and general network security. For example, techniques that limit initial communication latency like multi-hop security, where intermediate nodes need to decrypt and re-encrypt data, must be avoided. Just the sheer number of expected connected devices becomes a burden to maintaining the spectral efficiency, data rate, and capacity support along with security concerns. The Workshop on 5G Security will address a broad array of wireless security topics from the network perspective including the preferred security architectures and key security technologies, security for network function virtualization, privacy protections, secure support for machine type communications, and future research directions for the security mechanisms of 5G.

Speakers
  • Mr. Donald Purdy Jr (Chief Cybersecurity and Privacy Officer of Huawei USA)
  • Dr. Feng Bao (Director of Huawei Shield Lab): 5G Security & Privacy - Huawei 5G Security White Paper Release
